Injury accidents in Atlantic

“A massive information breakdown at NHTSA has led to deadly vehicle breakdowns on our roads,” said Markey, a member of Commerce, Science and Transportation Committee. “The Department of Transportation has the authority to require critical safety information be made publicly available, but it has never used its authority.” “NHTSA’s job should be to make life-saving information available, not more difficult to access. This up-to-date, accessible database will be a vital tool for drivers and consumer advocates in preventing future harm,” added Blumenthal. Rather than just submitting summary information on crashes, the legislation would require automakers to provide an accident report or other documentation that first alerted it to any fatality. NHTSA would then be forced to make those documents public unless there is a privacy or competitive reason not to do so. The bill would also require NHTSA to consider EWR data when investigating safety defects and upgrade its online databases to make them easier to search all at once. GM has linked 12 deaths and 31 crashes to the defective ignition switches. Gloria Bergquist, vice president of communications for the Alliance of Automobile Manufacturers in Washington, said it’s worth noting that since the EWR system was created there have been more than 5,500 recalls and it’s too early to tell if the current one warrants changing industrywide rules. “Multiple investigations are ongoing and no hearings have been held,” she said. “While we will review the proposed bill, it seems premature to assume there are systemic problems, much less to identify specific legislative fixes, before investigations are complete and the data necessary for thoughtful decision-making are gathered.” Meanwhile, in his letter to Holder, Blumenthal argued that without the Justice Department’s active involvement, people who suffered “financial harm, physical injury and death … may have no meaningful remedy.” GM may be protected from claims on crashes before July 2009, when it was restructured — in a process guided by Treasury Department officials — in bankruptcy court.

Fourth death in US festival crash

A fourth person has died of injuries suffered earlier in March when a suspected drunken driver drove into a crowd at the South by Southwest festival. DeAndre “Dre” Tatum, 18, died from the injuries he sustained after being run over when a driver who was fleeing police crashed through a barrier and into a street crowded with festival attendees on March 13. The Austin Police Department confirmed Tatum’s death via Twitter and with a brief, subsequent statement, but spokeswoman Veneza Bremner said no further information would be provided. Tatum was in a crowd outside an Austin club at the time of the crash. He was the last of the victims who had remained in critical condition at University Medical Center Brackenridge. Steven Craenmehr, 35, of the Netherlands, and Jamie West, 27, were killed at the scene. Sandy Le, 26, died of her injuries on March 17. More than 20 others were injured. Police have identified the driver of the vehicle as 21-year-old Rashad Owens. He is charged with capital murder and aggravated assault with a motor vehicle, and prosecutors are expected to seek additional charges against him from a grand jury. He’s accused of driving drunk and fleeing from police, then intentionally steering into the festival crowd and accelerating.

Months after 40,000 pounds of ham spilled off a Georgia onramp, a semi crash scattered thousands of corn dogs across an interstate. According to local news station KTBS , a tractor trailer hauling a load full of packaged corn dogs overturned on I-220 outside of Shreveport, La., Tuesday morning, spilling 75,000 sticks of the fried snack across the highway. There were no injuries, but the mounds of spilled dogs caused nine hours of delays while police cleaned up the delicious debris. The crash was apparently a big hit with the locals, many of whom scooped up the free snacks fate had tossed into their laps. “It’s a big mess, but a lot of folks will be eating pretty good this afternoon,” Corporal Marcus Hines of the Shreveport police told WWLTV . After providing the community with such a bounty, the driver of the truck will not face charges. Follow PEOPLE on Facebook!

Soldiers Respond to Dangerous Truck Accident

Christy said the driver of the vehicle was fortunate to have walked away with only a laceration on the leg and scrapes to his arm. When I heard about what they had done, I was very proud of our Soldiers, said Lt. Col. Daniel Leavitt, commander of the 3-348th Reg. Not only did they display selfless service by reacting quickly and responding to an accident involving a civilian truck driver in need of help, they demonstrated personal courage dealing with a situation involving hazardous explosive materials. Leavitt added several months prior, another medic with the 3-348th had assisted a driver in an overturned vehicle. These are the types of actions that leave no doubt in my mind that the Soldiers within the 3-348th are experts and professionals in what they do, said Leavitt. Leavitt went on to say he feels the pairing of military training and civilian skills these Soldiers possess could not have been a better fit in this situation. He said their skills allowed the team to properly and safely assess the situation, provide assistance to the driver and manage traffic until the civilian authorities could arrive and take over. Since our arrival in January, the local community in the Hattiesburg area around Camp Shelby, Mississippi has been very welcoming and friendly to our unit and all of our Soldiers, Leavitt said.

Two injured in Blue Island crash

The number of fatal automobile crashes in Texas has been on the decline since 1980, but for the past two years, both injury and fatal car accidents in Texas have risen. The increase in traffic fatalities has been linked to the states growth and economy, the Insurance Council of Texas (ICT) reported. With Texas rapid population growth and strong economy more people are on its highways and that translates into more accidents and more people getting hurt, said Anne McCartt, senior vice president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). In 2003, Texas Department of Transportation figures showed the state had 190,878 injury crashes, but the number had dropped to 139,690, or a 27 percent decline by 2011.In the past two years the numbers have risen, exceeding 152,000. Fatal crashes in Texas dropped from 3,371 in 2003 to 3,067 in 2011, or a 10 percent decline. But during the past two years the numbers increased to more than 3,330, the ICT said. From This Issue

Scotland keeper Allan McGregor set to miss rest of reason after suffering ‘car crash-like injury’ in pitch collision

Fiancee Leah Shevlin was believed to be at his bedside last night. A City source said: He is in a bad way. I think it is unlikely he will play again this season. The injury is extremely painful. We are not expecting him out of hospital any time soon. He has already been assessed by doctors but we cant say anything more at this time. McGregor, capped 31 times for Scotland, was treated on the field and appeared to be in severe pain as he was led off. After the match at Upton Park, Hull boss Steve Bruce said: Hes in a bad way. Hes got kidney damage. The specialist is on his way to see him. He has a contusion of his kidney, which we are hoping is not ruptured. A contusion to the kidney severe bruising normally comes as a result of a lower back injury. It is mostly seen as a result of road crashes. It causes severe pain and can cause nausea, vomiting, blood in the urine and muscle spasms in the back.

Paul Walker crash caused by ‘unsafe speed,’ investigators say

30. “Investigators determined the cause of the fatal solo-vehicle collision was unsafe speed for the roadway conditions,” sheriff’s Cmdr. Mike Parker said. Also PAUL WALKER: 1973-2013 The report came the same day that Universal Studios previewed the upcoming film “Fast & Furious 7″ at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, which gave the first glimpse of Walker’s final performance in the popular franchise. When Walker died, he still had a substantial portion of the film to shoot, and the studio pushed the film’s release from this summer to April 2015. Some reports have indicated that Walker’s character will be retired in the upcoming film, and that CGI and body doubles will be used in certain scenes. In the sheriff’s department report, officials found no evidence of any car system failures, but at least two of the tires were more than nine years old. Porsche recommends that tires be replaced after four years. My Car Crash Tv Experience: Trust Me, It’s No Fun When You’re In The Driving Seat

Survey: More Than 1 In 4 Car Crashes Involve Cellphone Use

I surveyed the list of panellists to see who was on to play the crazy Right-winger and realised, by deduction, that it was me. My fellow passengers were an Asian Lib Dem human rights campaigner, a former Apprentice star, a lesbian broadcaster, and Tim Stanley in a suit, tie and shoes by Clarks. I guess I represented that key demographic of under-35s who enjoy church picnics and think Jacob Rees-Mogg is a trend-setter. We dont want live fast and die young, because its getting old that were all looking forward to. If the audience had been a Rotary Club in Somerset, I mightve been well placed to get the odd clap. But this was the Broadwater Farm Estate in Tottenham, home of the infamous 1985 riot. And when I sat down in front of that audience of angry youths I knew I was in for a rough ride. The first question: Should the police judge people on the way they look? My heart sank. I was like a chicken who had gone into a foxs den to make the case for vegetarianism.

Speed and driver judgment were primary factors. No mechanical fault was found with the Porsche, although the tires on the car were nine years old, and that was found to be a contributing factor. Even tires on low-mileage high-performance cars should be replaced at six years, manufacturers advise, and some sources cited a call in the Porsche’s owners manual to change them at four years. As WCBS 880s Paul Murnane reported from Stamford, the National Safety Councils annual report found 26 percent of all crashes are tied to phone use, but noted just 5 percent involved texting. Survey: More Than 1 In 4 Car Crashes Involve Cellphone Use WCBS 880’s Paul Murnane Reports Safety advocates are lobbying now for a total ban on driver phone use , pointing to studies that headsets do not reduce drive distraction. Some motorists said they support the idea. Everybodys on a telephone. If people do cut you off, you look and theyre talking on the telephone. I think they are a problem. a driver told Murnane. Hands-free or not. People just get too involved in the conversation. Either pull over or wait, said another man. The survey found a 1 percent increase in cellphone-involved accidents compared with the previousyear. A spokesperson for the non-profit Governors Highway Safety Association told Marketwatch.com that it may be that drivers are more comfortable calling than texting in a moving vehicle.

‘Unsafe speed’ caused car crash that killed Paul Walker: sheriff

Wednesday. Red Oak Police say the accident occurred at the intersection of North 8th Street and U.S. Highway 34. Authorities say a car driven by 23-year-old Levi Triplett of Red Oak was southbound on North 8th when he stopped at a stop sign, then proceeded through the intersection. A westbound SUV driven by 33-year-old Corrine Jenkins, also of Red Oak, struck Triplett’s vehicle, despite swerving to avoid it. Jenkins’ vehicle then exited the roadway, struck a ditch very hard, then continued approximately 550 feet southwest into open grass. Triplett’s vehicle, meanwhile, struck a pickup driven by 28-year-old Andrew Herzberg of Villisca. Herzberg’s pickup was hauling cattle at the time. Red Oak Fire and Rescue removed Triplett from his vehicle. Triplett and Jenkins were taken by Red Oak Rescue to Montgomery County Memorial Hospital. Herzberg was not injured.

Unsafe speed determined as cause of Walker’s car accident

actor Paul Walker presents a creation from Colcci’s 2013/2014 summer collection during Sao Paulo Fashion Week in this March 21, 2013 file photo. Foto: Filipe Carvalho / Reuters The fiery car accident last year that killed “Fast & Furious” actor Paul Walker was caused by excessive speed and not a mechanical failure, the Los Angeles County Sheriff said on Tuesday, concluding its almost four-month investigation. The red Porsche Carrera GT sports car driven by Walker’s friend Roger Rodas, 38, was traveling at speeds of 80 to 93 miles per hour (129 to 150 kilometers per hour) before Rodas lost control of the car and crashed into trees and a utility pole in Santa Clarita, California, northwest of Los Angeles. “Investigators determined the cause of the fatal solo-vehicle collision was unsafe speed for the roadway conditions,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Commander Mike Parker said in a statement. Walker, 40, died from traumatic injuries and burns while Rodas died of multiple traumatic injuries in the one-car crash on November 30, the Los Angeles County coroner’s office determined in January. Walker was in the process of filming “Fast & Furious 7″ at the time and production was halted a few days later. No drugs or alcohol were found in the bodies of Walker and Rodas. The investigation determined that both were wearing seatbelts, and driver and passenger airbags had deployed. Universal Pictures said in December that the release of the seventh installment in the highly lucrative franchise would be pushed back by nine months to April 2015. Walker will appear in the film. Bicyclist killed Wednesday in collision with truck at Bluff Road and Rosewood Drive.

Bustillos was driving his black 1998 Dodge Ram pickup truck south on Bowen Street about 4 p.m. Feb. 26 and stopped at Boston Avenue when he apparently had a seizure, witnesses reported. The truck accelerated across Boston and crashed into the steel warehouse, which caught fire. Bustillos’ teenage children escaped the wreckage after trying to pull him from the pickup. The body of his pit bull, Sugar, was found at his feet in the cab of the truck. She apparently stubbornly stayed by his side. Tramadol is a drug used to treat moderate or severe pain. Boulder County Coroner Emma Hall said the cocaine and Tramadol levels in his body were high enough to have triggered a seizure, so the drugs are listed as “significant conditions” on his death certificate.
